Greenfield Middle School

We have been monitoring student absences since last week. Four of our buildings have seen improved attendance today without having crossed the established threshold for absences, while one building has not. We try to stay consistent when making decisions about canceling school for illness by using established guidelines because we recognize that school closure can be a hindrance for our families. Due to the number of students absent in addition to the students who went home ill today, Greenfield Middle School will be closed Tuesday, February 11 and Wednesday, February 12. Students and staff will return on Thursday, February 13. No middle school practices or events will be held during these two days. To ensure that our other buildings remain in good standing with attendance, please help us by keeping students who are ill at home for an appropriate amount of time to recover. We value good attendance, but not at the cost of causing illness to spread to others. We appreciate your support. Again, Greenfield Middle School ONLY will be closed February 11 and February 12. Mrs. Gall’s students have been learning about the United States Constitution. In the learning process, they learned the roles and responsibilities of the three branches of government. They then created a Constitutional Super Hero to show their knowledge of one branch of government. (Super Hero strategy credit goes to Mr. Kevin Roughton.)

After careful consideration of the cold temperatures forecasted for tomorrow, our district will be closed Tuesday, January 21, 2025. One of the primary factors considered is the number of students, along with their parents and guardians, who walk to school. Other districts in our area may not have any, or very few, students who have to walk to school. Each district must consider many factors when making decisions regarding delays and closings. A decision regarding the schedule for Wednesday, January 22, will be communicated tomorrow afternoon. How do snow days work? Technically, our expectation for attendance from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce is not based on days. Instead, it is based on hours. Districts can still choose to implement policies in which, for example, students make up days missed after having a specified number of calamity days. The length of our district’s school day allows for a “buffer”, keeping us from having to make up days missed for a specified period of time. The number of hours required for students varies based on their grade level band. The hours we are not in session are monitored, and should we get to the point where we will be making up hours missed, we will communicate that information in advance. Congratulations to our students who earned honor roll and/or perfect attendance for the second nine weeks!

Due to the wind that is expected overnight and in the early morning, which is already causing deteriorating road conditions, the Greenfield Exempted Village School District will be on a two-hour delay Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Please remember that breakfast will not be served. Also, for those parents of children in grades 1-6 who are participating in the youth cheer clinic, forms were sent home with students yesterday. The completed form and payment can be returned to your child’s school office by tomorrow, or you can attend the in-person sign-up scheduled for tomorrow from 5:00 until 6:00 at Greenfield Elementary. Greenfield residents and businesses, we need your help! We are working to fund scholarships for some of our middle school students to attend our annual Washington DC trip. The individual cost is $925 for the four day trip, which covers everything except one meal. Individuals can donate through the Greenfield Middle School PTO. The Greenfield Exempted Village School District will be closed on Friday, January 10, 2025. We would need a delay at the least due to the condition of roads and bus turn-around areas. With the snow forecasted to begin in the early afternoon, we do not want to risk the safety of our students, families, and staff.
